How do you get the pen tool to fill in the letters like that?

On these, I actually id it by hand. But there is a way with the tool in Shape > Engraving > Inside. But it usually takes me a lot of cleanup to get it to work right. So I son the reading glasses and color like a kindergartener - it's fun!
