Make a Simple Luminary

Luminaries have been a common Halloween and Christmas decoration for decades. It isn’t hard to understand why. They are easy to make and can create an eerie glow for Halloween or a warm holiday welcome for Christmas. Traditionally they were intended to line the sidewalk as a greeting leading up to the front door. Usually they were made from plain paper bags filled with sand to weigh them down and a candle provided the light. While the luminaries in today’s lesson are for the indoors only, they make an easy, spooky greeting for the Halloween season.

The only requirements for the luminaries shown are one piece of black cardstock, a sheet of orange vellum and battery operated votive candles. There are several fun and spooky looking fonts on the internet for free or you may find one already on your computer. I used CK Corral for the word BOO on my luminaries. I found the spider web in the craft room library and there are loads more Halloween images to choose from. I think I will make a bunch of them and use different words such as EEK! and SPOOKY. I may do some that are just image silhouettes as well. These work up so fast that I can have a veritable forest of luminaries done in an afternoon.

Once again, WYSiWYG (or What You See Is What You Get)Β plays an important part in creating the luminary window and makes the combining of spooky shapes and creepy words easy to do. If you are a new Inspiration user be sure to watch the videos on WYSiWYG to understand how it works.

Since I seem to have misplaced my voice somewhere due to a cold πŸ™‚ I have made the instructions in a downloadable PDF format. Be sure to download the cutting file for the luminaries I designed as well. Then, try your hand at making your own luminary designs!Β  Have fun!

    LOL…I am sitting here laughing because I think that you and I were misplaced twins at birth. Klo had given a file for making boxes…and I had luminaries on the brain. I strove for a Christmas one that ended up looking more like Valentine’s Day..but I laugh that once again, you and I are on the same wave length. This is just too weird.

    BTW! Cute luminary!

    LOL how funny that our minds wander in the same directions so often!

    This is beautiful! It’s PERFECT because it can be adapted to any holiday and occasion.

    Ugh, still waiting on my Pazzles to be delivered (should be here tomorrow afternoon… UPS hurry up already!) and I THINK once I get basic shapes down I will be rather ambitious and try this… tomorrow night! πŸ™‚

    I’m envisioning a nightlight for a child’s room (or any room for that matter) with a cut-out to coordinate and using my favorite battery candle that has timers for on/off times.

    I can’t wait to make these. This also gives me an idea to use the wysiwyg tool to make patterns for carving pumpkins.

    @lucybrowne – that’s a great idea!

    I made these today, and they’re very cute. I just need to get some battery operated votives now! I’m excited to adapt the lesson to a Christmas theme πŸ™‚
