Dr. Seuss Day

All over the country, kids are celebrating the Birthday of Dr. Seuss. We have been enjoying his books since I was a little girl- which is a REALLY long time ago! The first book I ever read was ‘Green Eggs and Ham’. I also have fond memories of reading his silly rhyming books with our kids before bed. (Although, I have to admit that some of them didn’t really settle the kids down to sleep!) My grandkids could dress up like Dr. Suess characters for school today and I was, of course, thrilled when my daughter asked me to help with the costumes.

The Cat in the Hat costume was pretty easy: the hat is poster board in red and white and 2 paper plates. It is held on Derek’s head with an elastic strap. A black shirt and pants plus a felt tummy complete the costume. (He had white gloves but being a typical 6 year old, he forgot them at home.) A red felt bow tie finishes the look.

Sally’s costume required a sewing machine. We bought two inexpensive tank tops. One in ladies size XS and one in XL. We cut off the tank part of the large one and sewed a waistband casing. We then threaded elastic through the casing to fit Kirsten’s waist. She wore the skirt over the smaller tank top to make the dress. We completed the costume with a felt bow.

Kelley and Kayla, also six years old, were Thing 1 and Thing 2. Actually, Kayla wanted to be Thing 1 but Kelley didn’t want a costume because she thought she would look silly. 🙂 We made her a costume just in case and sure enough, Kayla managed to convince sister that there had to be a Thing 2. The blue hair is made from car wash mits that we cut down one side. They are held on by an elastic loop and button in the back. The Thing 1 and 2 T-shirts were made with Pazzles Flock Iron On. I really had fun making these and the project was completed quickly and looks professional too! Every time I use our Iron On, I wonder why I don’t use it more often.

I am including the Thing 1 and Thing 2 cutting files just in case you would like to make your own costumes!
