DIY Fall Paper Lantern
Luminaries and lanterns help to balance the shorter days in the fall and winter months, bringing a bit of cozy cheer to the home. We’re going to make a few of these for a fall socially distanced gathering and then enjoy them indoors thereafter in our family room. They would also make a nice night light for a bedroom or bathroom.
Resize, Add Parchment Paper, or Change the Designs for Other Seasons
These lanterns are approximately seven inches tall excluding the wire, but can be resized up or down—it’s probably best to keep the stars the same size as in the file if making smaller lanterns, just delete some as you think best fits the smaller space. The lantern can be made open, with no light diffusion, or several options to screen the direct light source could be used such as parchment paper, colored or white tissue paper, tracing paper, colored translucent notebook subject dividers or report covers, or even cheesecloth or lace. You could adapt this to Halloween and add plastic spiders and webbing, or replace the leaves with hearts for a Valentine’s Day luminary, or with stars for a summer luminary that even works well for sleepovers.
Make In Under an Hour and Add Color with Tissue Paper
This project takes under an hour as is and has many possible adaptations in addition to those mentioned above, such as using it with a small rechargeable flashlight (for tabletop use only as it would cause the bottom to fall out from the weight), making the alternate version in the file for winter months and pairing it with gold or bright blue tissue paper, as well as coating the assembled (all but the bottom) lantern with spray Mod Podge and a coat or two of acrylic sealer or spraying it with silver spray paint for a faux metal look.
Supplies:
Cardstock – fine textured almost black – best choice is a paper with a white core as the light will pass through at the edges of the cut outs adding a nice effect
Glue dots or crafter’s tape.
Parchment paper or tissue paper
Craft wire
Battery Operated Tea lights or fairy lights
