Intricate DIY Sugar Skull Designs

I know it isn’t in the best taste to self-congratulate but I don’t care, I love these sugar skulls! I have been wanting to make this set for forever but was really intimidated by the intricate details needed to make a sugar skull design. But I finally took the plunge and as these began to take shape I couldn’t have been happier.

Use to Celebrate Dia de Los Muertos, Halloween, or anytime!

These sugar skulls are inspired by Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, which is a festival that runs Oct. 31 – Nov. 2. If you have a Latin heritage (or you’ve at least seen Disney’s Coco) you already know about this amazing festival. Of course, these sugar skulls are super popular for Halloween and just in general as well because they are simply too cool.

24 Options to Choose From

There are 10 different sugar skulls, each with two versions (the ones shown above are the sort of “negative cut out”). I have also included 4 basic skulls so that if you want to try making your own, you’ve already got a good base. All totalled there are 24 designs!

Eye-Catching DIY Sugar Skull Lanterns

Once I finished the designs then the question became how best to use them. There are TONS of ideas out there but once I saw all the glowing mason jar ideas on Pinterest, my heart was set on it. What I love is that this is a simple project with high impact. EVERYONE will notice these glowing lanterns, trust me!

Several Glowing Options

The glow comes from a glowstick. You can either cut and pour the glowing liquid into your jar or put the whole glowstick in. Either way, you’ll want to use something to help diffuse the glow. I used glitter but there are other options too. I have included several options in the instructions.

Also, don’t do the glowstick portion until you are ready to display your lanterns! The glow will last many hours but it’s definitely going to be used up by morning.

Since these designs are intricate, you will want to make sure you have your settings just right. Here is a video tutorial showing you how to do a vinyl test cut and adjust your settings.

Test Cut: Vinyl

While using the default settings will work many times, sometimes we need to make an slight adjustment to make our cutting just right.  In this video, we will show you what to look for when cutting vinyl, iron on, HTV or other materials that need to remain on the backing, all starting with a star.

Supplies:
Mason jar
Black vinyl
Glow sticks
Glitter (optional)
Wax Paper (optional)
