DIY Embellishments: Patchwork Paper Pieces

Patchwork-Embellishments

I keep thinking about making a quilt. I’ve been looking at quilt patterns as a way to give myself a pep talk and convince myself that I can actually do it. Quilt patterns are kind of amazing. When you look at a finished block you see a butterfly, but when you look really close you see a series of triangles and squares that make up that butterfly. It fascinates me! To wrap up this week of DIY embellishments I’ve created a set of eight patchwork inspired embellishment pieces. One of the Design Team Members mentioned having difficulty with this assignment because to her, everything she creates with her Inspiration is an embellishment, which is very true. The idea behind this week is to have a bit of a cutting binge and make some embellishments ahead of time to have on hand. We wanted to encourage you to look at those packages of embellishments at the store and instead of buying them, make your own.

Once you’ve made up a batch of these patchwork embellishments, use them on your pages and cards, or add them to a tag shape for a quick gift tag. If you are looking for something new to try, cut these out of stiffened fabric and create them for cards or tags. You can find information on cutting fabric in our Cutting Fabric Video.

After I layered my pieces and adhered them to the mat piece, I randomly stitched a few spots with my sewing machine to make them look truly patchwork.

Beautiful colors. This is a wonderful idea. Some of those pieces take work. That is dedication.

As a quilter, I’m super excited to cut these. Planning to put them on a gift card with a baby quilt! Thanks for creating them just in time!

mcclearyscrap-You could cut them out of the fabric you made the quilt with. Wouldn’t it be impressive to have a matching tag with your gift!

Thank you Michelle. I love looking at quilts too and have wanted to start making quilted design cards. Now I have the cutting files for perfect hexagons (without the sweat!) 😀 Now to pick out my papers…..

One of the main reasons I bought my inspiration was to be able to make my own embellishments without having to try and find ‘just the right one’ and save some money in doing so. These are adorable, and shows off that we are only limited by our imaginations with our inspiration cutters to execute our creative plans!
Great job Michelle, they’re so bright and cheery!
