Recently I needed a hat for an event that I was attending, so I decided to dress up a plain sun hat with some foam flowers and ribbon. It was a simple project that served its purpose well.
I used my Pazzles Vue to cut the parts for the flowers from thin foam sheets of various colors, and I cut the leaves and stamens from paper, as I didn’t have foam in the colors I needed for these. Color can be applied to the cut foam by sponging with alcohol or distress inks, if color variations are desired.
The foam is shaped using a heat embossing tool. The heat causes the foam petals to curl . The longer the foam is heated, the more it shrinks and curls. The petals may be used singly, or layered with 2 or more layers to get the look you want. I used two layers on each of my flowers. The top layer of the white flower has the back side up, for a different look. I shaped the leaves and triple layered stamens using a hand embossing tool on a foam mat, then glued the layers together. The pearl sticker in the center added a nice finishing touch.
I glued a strip of rhinestone bling to a satin ribbon to wrap around the base of the hat brim, and glued the finished flowers to the brim.
